Theatre

The Vision Theatre, a Spanish-style Art Deco movie house built in 1931, located in the heart of Leimert Park Village, stands as the crown jewel of South Los Angeles. This highly revered architectural treasure has been an essential part of this thriving artistic community for nearly 90 years.

Purchased in 1990, by famed actress Marla Gibbs and renamed the Vision Theatre, amid the 1992 civil uprising and the economic recession that heavily impacted Los Angeles it soon fell on hard times. The City of Los Angeles subsequently took control of the venue and in the years since, with the goal of maximizing the theatre as a community resource and symbol of civic pride, it has led a multi-phase renovation to return this space to its former grandeur. Once completed, the theatre will feature programming of diverse world-class theater, music, dance and educational events, along with offering a variety of cultural forums. And reaffirming Leimert Park as a city-wide hub of cultural activity that specializes in presenting the African American experience and cultural traditions of the diaspora.
